When I sat in our backyard today morning and listened to the mixture of noises coming from all around I found myself tuning into the chirping of a cicada nearby. I do not know why it was the cicada that captured my attention, but I was spellbound by the strange clicking sounds that reverberated with such intensity. Sometimes there was a considerable increase in volume. Then the loud episode would get to the point where it was almost unnerving till it would recede and empty itself into silence. The cicada alternated between louder and quieter parts in a way that drew me in and I followed its song for quite a while. I couldn’t help wondering: If spirit would chirp like a cicada what would it try to tell me? Instead of an answer – or maybe as an answer – a breeze came up and whisked over me.
